10 reviews for Piscifun Sword Fly Fishing Reel with CNC-machined Aluminum Alloy Body 5/6 Gunmetal

I bought this for our annual Salmon fishing trip to Alaska. I had been using a different name-brand reel, but I had some issues with the other one, namely small size and insufficient drag. When you hook a salmon in the river, they instantly run. If you snag them in the tail, they run fast downstream. Most fly reels do not have much drag, as you don’t need it much with smaller fish. The Piscifun has a large knob with which you can easily crank down the drag. This year, I just pointed my rod at the fish and let them take line. The larger spool makes for easier cranking, when controlling a large fish. I am very satisfied with this purchase, and will buy again (spare setup). I was not paid for this review.

I use the reel at most half a dozen times at most and then the drag jam up. Whan I took it apart fond the cork drag disk fall all apart and that is the pic of the cork disk. just email piscifun to see if they will send me a new cork drag disk if they do I will up date the rating . When I did use it and was working i loveed the reel. very strong and not at all loose like other i Owned that were 2 to 3 time the price. It seem like a very will made reel. think they should of use a Carbon or other material Drag disk6/7/2019 up date it took some time to get the part I need because it came from China who knows I my have got Caught up in customs. They did sending me a new cork washer which they did no charge to me plus they sent me 2 of them. great Customer service wood highly recommended this reel

I’ve used this reel several times now and have to say it is a huge upgrade from the walmart special I used before. I am planning on buying a second for sinking line as it is a cheap in cost, well-made reel that seems like it could last a lifetime with the full disassembly and care instructions provided. I also bought a new rod in combination with this reel, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0197J9Q8Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 the tailwater rod and this reel work fantastically together and have a great balance. I wasn’t getting quite the distance as a fellow fly fisher but his rod/reel combo were $600+ and I am still learning, he had a lifetime of experience on me. I’ve already seen more success in my first 2 weeks of fly fishing with this setup than I did all of my last 2 seasons combined. I am also using Piscifun weight forward floating line and backing on my reel, I can’t say anything bad about either (the line is also miles above what my old was) and plan to leave a review on those as well.

This is a very impressive fly reel. It its extremely well made, light, great looking and very smooth with an excellent drag. I currently have forward tapered #4 floating fly line loaded on this reel making a superb small stream fly fishing outfit. What especially appeals to me about this reel is that that it is constructed of beautifully CNC machined 606T-T6 aluminum alloy and much stronger than the die cast reel it replaced. I like the one way clutch bearing for quick hook ups and this that reel is sealed to protect from corrosion. The smooth cork and stainless steel drag is really nice in helping reduce break offs when using a very light tippet when fighting large trout (when lucky enough to hook one). This reel has so many great features at a very reasonable price. The quality to cost ratio is amazing and based on other reviews I have read, I see I am just one of many fans of this reel. This is now my favorite fly reel for trout fishing. I highly recommend this reel and this will be my go to fly reel brand and model if I need a larger fly reel in the future for bass fishing. Now all I need to do is purchase a second spool so I do a quick change of lines when conditions require a different line.

this is a really high quality reel for any price! I am 70 yrs old and have used about every high end reel marketed in the past. started with the hardy line of English reels in the 70s, thru sage, scientific anglers, orvis, etc. used to think that if they cost a lot more, they were a lot better (ah, alas, the errors of youth!) not so! this is a machined aluminum reel of top grade metal with really high level machining. the drag is excellent and smooth and the reel is aesthetically eye catching. who cares if your reel didn’t cost $300 or $400 (with spare spools costing $150+). I know the fish don’t. lets face it, a fly reel is, for most, just a device so you don’t have to wind the left over line around your arm, isn’t it??? why spend the big bucks unless you are fighting really large fish that put your gear to the highest test. this reel is the ultimate bargain for those looking for high quality at an incredibly low price. cheap is cheap, but this reel is just inexpensive. cheap and inexpensive often don’t have anything in common. don’t be confused, this reel is worth the price two or three times over. take it from someone that has learned that quality doesn’t have to be expensive, and that trying to impress the “Jones’s” is a total waste of time. who cares about them anyway???

I bought this for an 8 wt set up fishing for redfish on the Texas flats. Had full intentions of upgrading to a new reel after a year or so, but have changed my mind. I have turned upper slot reds with it and never maxed the drag out! The reel holds plenty of line, and it is easy to pull apart and clean. Added bonus is the spare spools are ~$30, so you can easily change between 7 wt line, or to a sinking fly line when fishing over deeper water.***Update***Purchased the 6wt version of this paired with a Thomas & Thomas – Zone fly rod. Biggest fish to date is a 26″ redfish, and it still never got down to the backing! Almost tempted to go down to a 4 wt just to see if it too can handle a redfish!

I picked up this reel (size 7/8 Gunmetal) to replace my recently broken M60. Where I currently live, I am almost strictly saltwater fly fishing. From top to bottom I am happy with this reel. The price is simply unbeatable. It came well-packaged and includes a soft bag inside the cardboard box as well as a diagram of the exploded reel and all its components. I am not crazy about the green accents but glad the color turned out to be a nice darker/vibrant green rather then a softer/lighter green. The gunmetal itself is very attractive and there are no seams, as expected since this was advertise as a fully machined reel. It has just the right amount of weight and there is no play between the spool and frame. The drag knob is large and studded with diamond plate which makes it very easy to use even with cold, wet hands. The reel is nice to palm when working in a large bluefish or striper. The retrieve is dead silent and scary smooth. There is a soft click with drawing out line. The cork drag system is smooth and consistent. I feel very much protected in the event something goes wrong, both by Amazon and by the 3-year warranty from Piscifun. I will update this review if anything new develops but so far, I could not be happier.

I have 2 of these reels now and absolutely love them for the price. They look amazing and work really well. People seem to complain about how well the drag might work with a large fish but for trout, Bass and other small to medium sized species I am sure this these reels will hold up just fine. Maybe I’ll buy a larger 7/8 for steelies at some point and give it a try but definitely cannot go wrong for trout. I have the 3/4 for a smaller 4 wt (7’9″) that fits perfect and a 5/6 for my longer 4 wt (9′) and probably get another spool for the 5/6 and gear up with fly line for my 5 wt that is coming. As you can see, I specified the lengths on my fly rods because I would recommend going a size up for your longer rods to have a slightly larger reel since these are medium arbor and not large. Your longer rods should have a bit more backbone than the smaller ones of the same wt. These reels are absolutely beautiful and the performance is amazing for the price. Cannot beat this value and I feel these work just as well as some slightly pricier, big name fly company reels. Great for my Colorado stream fishing. Thanks

I always felt it strange that a $60.00 spinning reel was considered a good reel, but a $60 fly fishing reel was considered cheap. Why? Doesn’t a spinning reel have more moving parts? Sellers will say “It’s machined out of a single block of Aluminum.” Well, apparently so is this reel. “But it has a superior drag system” they’ll say. Well, you’ll have to take their word for it, because most of us don’t have a clue how one drag system varies from another. And guess what? We seldom get to use it anyway! For most fish that I catch, my “drag system” is my hand on the line, because I’ve got 20 feet of stripped line between me and the reel! For most of us, all we want a reel that keeps our line under control, with a drag that will handle an occasional larger fish. And it needs to be lite weight and nice enough looking so it looks good on our overpriced rod. This reel works on all counts. Great value!

I’m using this reel as a backup for my big LOOP reel, so comparing the Piscifun to the LOOP I am critical.First, the drag for me is very good, very adjustable, the micrometer adjustment is progressive and consistent, I used this reel last weekend and in fighting a nice winter steelhead it was smooth consistent and enabled me to land a nice fish.Second, the attention to detail in the manufacturing was WAY better than I thought it would be. While different in design to my Loop, it is finished very very nice, and is 85% less $$$ than the cost of my LOOP.Third, its light weight and feels very balanced used with my Sage One 11′ switch rod, have not weighed it, but feels slightly lighter than my LOOP. Too many reels today are heavy and throwing the balance off your setup off is a “turn-off” I like its light weight. With fishing Switch or Spey rods this Piscifun reel holds lots of backing, running line, shooting heads without being overloaded. Presently using it in fresh water, but it takes a dunking with absolutely no change in the drag or the way it works. Reels like this are tools in fighting big fish, and this is a very surprisingly nice tool.
